  3.                  BVP versus FVP
  4.  
  5. Another consideration in specifying lens power is 
  6. the difference between "front vertex power" and 
  7. "back vertex power".   Clinically we usually specify 
  8. back vertex power (BVP), but occasionally the 
  9. laboratory will specify front vertex power (FVP).
  10.  
  11. With a contact lens of significant power (over 6 
  12. diopters) there is often a significant difference 
  13. between the two.  This means if you specify or 
  14. measure the power as BVP and the lab makes the 
  15. lens as FVP you will not get the lens you want.

  17. The BVP is read with the back surface against the 
  18. stop of the lensometer-the focal length is 
  19. measured from the back surface.

  21. The FVP is read with the front surface against the 
  22. stop of the lensometer-the focal length measured 
  23. from the front surface.

  25. When ordering a high powered lens (+ or -) be sure to specify BVP.
